Philosophy of Music Education

Music is for everyone.  It is not something that one is born either with or without.  Music performance is a skill, like any other, that can be learned to some degree by every person.  Music and the arts should be part of each student’s daily education.  Music programs help students develop self-esteem, self-discipline, self-motivation and cooperation skills necessary for success in life.

Throughout history, great societies have understood the importance of learning the arts.  Activities like performing, moving, creating, listening and self-expression provide the student with an environment in which to strive for development of intelligent behavior, social skills, and a life-long appreciation for music and the arts.

Students have a tendency to believe that success in music is based primarily on talent.  So you are either born with it or without it.  Older students seem to believe this more than younger, and girls more than boys.  My philosophy, however, is that music is a skill that anyone can learn.  I have an effort-based approach to teaching rather than an ability-based approach.  I encourage students that if you work hard enough you WILL get it.
