| Lucky 13 Technical Exercises for Band The Lucky 13 Technical Exercises for Band was compiled by Sid Hearn in 2000 while working as Band Director at Deshler High School in Tuscumbia, Alabama. It is a synthesis of exercises from many sources, which have proven to develop successful ensembles over the years. Most of the exercises are either unison or split into an A part and B part. Consequently, rather than individual parts for each wind instrument, there are SIX PARTS, one of which each instrument can play. On the exercises which are written only in unison, the conductor may split the ensemble into A and B sections. A may play the written exercise, while B may sustain the first pitch of each exercise segment, and vice versa. A and B may also alternate.
