Five-tone Articulation Patterns for Band

The Five-tone Articulation Patterns for Band was inspired by Dr. Edd Jones at the University of North Alabama, and compiled by Sid Hearn in 2000 while working as Band Director at Deshler High School in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

The Five-Tone series are notated on the 2nd page of each Lucky 13 part.

There are eight articulation patterns in the set.  Each pattern uses the first five tones of a scale.  The articulation patterns can be used in any key.  The repeated section should be played three times, followed by holding the dotted half-note.

Also notice that since there are eight articulation patterns, each pattern can be used on a different starting pitch in the scale.  For instance, #1 can be played using notes 1-5 of a scale.  #2 can be played using notes 2-6 of the same scale, etc.

The Five-Tone Articulation Patterns should be practiced with a metronome to assure even, consistent articulation through time.
