Band Philosophy

Participation in a performing ensemble is a practical and effective way for youth to experience first-hand how their actions and efforts directly affect the lives of others around them.  It provides a culture in which to learn socially, and a setting that is unique in schools where the student can be profoundly impacted by one or more teachers over a number of years.

Bands should not be for only the elite or the talented.  All students should have instruction which emphasizes performance fundamentals, striving to develop musical talents and skills which lead to individual and group performance.  Students should study and perform individually and in groups of various sizes, literature from a variety of composers, historical periods and cultures.

Bands and band directors have many responsibilities.  Primarily, a band should provide quality musical learning activities, and then balance that with school and community expectations.  A band should be something that gives its members, school and community a sense of pride, while maintaining the highest standards and expectations musically and visually.
